Who are we? A team of Health Educators who work with schools to encourage system change as it relates to increase in Physical Education & activity.
What do we do? We work in various counties to help promote Physical Education and activity in the school day. We always encourage schools to participate in programs such as Take 10 and Feeling Good Mileage Club that incorporates activity in the classroom as it relates to the lesson.
Walking Routes – Those shoes were made for walking! Contact your local Health Department’s CHP team to have your halls, sidewalks or playgrounds measured and receive help setting up a safe walking route in or around your school.
After-School Activity Ideas – Contact a member of the CHP team for ideas to make your After-School Program Active.
Classroom Session(s) – Health Educators are available if your classroom needs a little help introducing or emphasizing the key points of physical activity and nutrition and how they work together for optimal health. Contact your local CHP team member to schedule a session for your class.
Cardio Carnival – Take a look at our Cardio Carnival program designed to teach students about Physical Activity, Nutrition and Tobacco/Asthma in a fun and interactive environment.
Who are we? Health Educators who develop and implement health related programs/curriculums in our 8-county service area. We also serve as a liaison between the Barren River District Health Department and the schools in our 8-county district. The “School Health Center of Excellence” SHCOE mission is to help rally public health and community resources toward the development of stronger, more comprehensive school health programs.
What do we do? Health Educators work with the schools in our district to provide education in classroom/assembly sessions. We also provide training and materials from our lending library to schools. Our focus areas as it relates to youth include Tobacco, Physical Activity, Nutrition, Safety, Bullying and other various topics. The SHCOE is in place to work with the schools in a partnership to address health among youth and those that serve youth also.
Who are we?
We are health educators working with our clinics and schools to promote healthy children and staff by providing education and referrals.
What do we do?
The Health Educators provide Humana Vitality screenings for school faculty and staff; these screenings include blood glucose, HDL, LDL, Triglycerides, total Cholesterol, blood pressure, height, weight, BMI, waist circumference. All this is done by a quick finger stick, results given on site and results uploaded into the Humana Vitality system to give the participant preventive care points. Health coaching is done as needed.
The BRDHD health department contract with the school systems to provide school health nurses. As health educators we also provide referrals for school staff.
Nutrition Environment & Services
Who are we? We are health educators with knowledge of nutrition and health trends as it relates to obesity.
What do we do? We provide Nutrition education in the form of curricula such as 5-2-1-0 and Choose My Plate. We collect BMI data that will assess obesity rates in our district. We actively participate in School Wellness Councils and also provide trainings for school food service personnel.
Counseling, Psychological & Social Services
Who are we? Health Educators who provide quality education and workshops on Bullying Prevention, Sexting and Texting, and Dating Violence.
What do we do? The Barren River District Health Department offers bullying education to children grades 3-5. In addition, workshops on bullying are available to parents, educators and school personnel. Sexting/Texting Classes are available for grades 6-12. A one-hour class on dating violence and healthy relationships is available for grades 9-12.
Bullying educational objectives for grades 3-5 include: Learning what to do when people say mean things to you Developing a plan to protect yourself from physical harm The importance of involving adults
Bullying educational objectives for adults include: Identifying and define the three types of bullying Developing a step-by-step intervention plan Learning how to provide bullying education to high-risk children and their parents Gain an understanding of Kentucky bullying laws
Sexting/Texting objectives for grades 6-12 include: Develop an understanding of why youth participate in sexting Learn about long-term outcome thinking and why it is important in decision making Develop an understanding of the potential legal ramifications of sexting
Healthy Relationships educational objectives for youth include: Be able to state why healthy relationships are important Be able to state the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships Be able to list the keys to a healthy relationships Be able to identify the signs of an unhealthy relationship Be able to indentify ways to help a friend who is in an unhealthy relationship
Social & Emotional Climate
Who are we? We are health educators who recognize the impact of drug abuse and other environmental impacts.
What do we do? We providing education and programs to all grade levels, including staff if requested. Such programs are Puppet Shows, Tobacco 101 and other drug education as needed.
Who are we?
We are educators that deliver health promotion information and activities to the workplace.
What do we do?
We can come to your school and provide “Humana Vitality” screenings for staff. We can also help you establish a walking route and or a walking club, lead fitness classes after school and assist you with a personal health plan. Health Educators are trained for health coaching and can assist in helping school staff set fitness goals as well as providing education, challenges, and support in reaching those goals.
Who are we?
We are health educators that collaborate with community partners in an effort to meet the holistic needs of our children.
What do we do?
We serve on advisory boards for area schools in an effort to meet the needs of families in our community. We provide parenting classes as requested. Our District Health Department is a community business partner to a local school that we have adopted.
