January 2008 Employee of the Month

Susan Brown is the January 2008 Employee of the Month. Christine Hanshaw and Mindy Key nominated her. Christine says, "My stepdaughter called on a Saturday afternoon, very worried about a problem with breastfeeding. I called Susan, hoping she would be willing to call my stepdaughter on a weekend. I knew it was a lot to ask since my stepdaughter lives in Louisville. Susan wasn’t home when I left the message, but when she came home at almost 9:00 that night; she called her and talked to her for an hour! My stepdaughter was very appreciative and mentioned how nice Susan was. I am so grateful to her—she is a real gem!" Mindy had this to say of Susan, "Susan headed the efforts to provide for a mom who was pregnant with twins, from one of her classes, who was in need of everything. She collected enough donations to fill an empty 3-bedroom apartment. I know that for Susan, this was more than a task to complete, it was about truly connecting to another human being in need, and that is exactly what she did!"

Susan started working for the BRDHD in October of 1990. She says her favorite thing about working in the BRDHD is the time she spends caring for moms and babies. But, she quickly added, "As far as working with my co-workers, I will never forget the miracles they provided for me after my horrific car wreck. So many caring people gave me sick time, gift cards, flowers, daily get well wishes, encouragement, visits, peaches and prayers! My family and I were so blessed and would not have survived the ten months it took to recover, without the outpouring of love and kindness from everyone employed within our 8 counties! Jenny Thomas drove me back and forth to work for 16 months until my feet and ankles had healed enough to drive again. I’m extremely proud of the way our Barren River District HD family rallies around one another in times of need. It’s a very special place with very special people!"

Susan lives in Glasgow with her husband, Mark and they have four grown daughters and five grandchildren. Lori (36) and her husband Joey, and their four children: Dillan (16), Chelsea (12), Charli (9), and JoJo (5); Jami (33) and her husband Robert, and their son Andrew (11); Maggie (26); and Lindsey (24). Susan enjoys spending time with her own family when she’s not here caring for the families in the BRDHD.

Congratulations Susan!
