Communicable Disease Team
The Communicable Disease staff of the Barren River
District Health Department consists of an epidemiologist and registered nurses who are available
to assist with Kentucky Reportable Disease issues. Their
responsibilities include gathering data, field investigation, education
and consultation with state and local experts/physicians to control the
outbreak and prevent the spread of disease. They provide
weekend and holiday coverage.

Communicable Disease Control |
|
The Communicable Disease team responsibility's
include gathering data, field investigation, education and
consultation with state and local experts/physicians to control the
outbreak and prevent the spread of disease.
They also monitor all active tuberculosis (TB)
cases in 8 counties. Other TB related functions are:
- Education of individuals in the community
and staff of health department, correctional facilities and long
term care facilities regarding treatment and follow up
- Providing preventive treatment, monitoring
for side effects, and providing Direct Observed Therapy (DOT) to all
individuals with TB disease
- Monthly clinic held for medical evaluation
by a Pulmonologist of individuals who have suspect or actual TB
disease and all new positive TV skin test converters

Epi-Rapid Response Team
|
|
The district-wide
multi-discipline staff team members are specially
trained to respond to disease outbreaks with surveillance and intervention
activities. In this capacity, they work under the direction of the
state Epi-Response Team. |

Disaster Response |
|
The Communicable Disease team responds to any
disaster within the community in collaboration with
Emergency
Management Services,
LifeSkills and the
American Red Cross.
Their duties include administration of vaccine, management of vaccine
supply, education and other nursing services. They provide education on disaster response for the BRDHD staff.
They also educate staff and community health care providers on how to
better prepare for local response to a bio-terrorist attack. |

Immunizations |
|
The CD team serves as consultants to local health
care providers child care facilities, parents, and individuals in the
community on immunization recommendations. |
