Notification letter to Food Establishments October 25, 2005 Dear Food Service Operators; On July 25, 2005, the Barren River District Board of Health passed a resolution requiring all food establishments such as restaurants, retail food markets with delis, bed & breakfasts, hospitals, nursing homes, day care centers, schools and other places that prepare and serve food to the public, to have at least one manager on staff who is certified in an approved food safety course. The regulation went into effect in October, 2005. Food service establishments must be in full compliance with this regulation no later than January 1, 2007. In order to assist managers in complying, the Barren River District Health Department is preparing to offer a Food Manager Certification Course. Our class will consist of approximately five (5) hours of instruction with a test at the end. The certification is good for three (3) years. The first classes will be held on November 14, 2005 at the Warren County Health Department, on December 7, 2005 at the Logan County Health Department, and on December 20, 2005 at the Barren County Health Department. Beginning in January 2006, classes will be held on the second Tuesday of each month at the Warren County Health Department, the third Tuesday of each month at the Barren County Health Department and the fourth Wednesday at the Logan County Health Department. All classes will start promptly at 9 AM. Registration for each class ends one week prior to the class; therefore, we must have your application and fee on or before the cut-off date for each class. The fee is $50.00 for each person attending the course. After January 2007, our inspectors will check during regular food service inspections to ensure that a certified person is on staff at each establishment. If a manager has been certified within the last three (3) years in another approved food safety course such as ServSafeÓ, he or she may ask to have that course recognized instead of attending our class. The application should be completed; a copy of the certification, and ten ($10.00) dollars should be submitted to the Barren River District Health Department. A certification card and certificate will then be mailed to the individual. This certification will be good only for the remainder of the three (3) year period. If a manager has attended training other than the ones listed on the application form within the last three (3) years and wishes to have that course considered instead of attending our class, the manager should contact Barry Turner, Environmental Director, at the Barren River District Health Department (270) 781-8039 ext. 150 to discuss the requirements. Please note there are over nine hundred (900) food establishments in our district. Consequently, a large number of managers will need to be trained prior to January 1, 2007. Class sizes will be limited, so please register as soon as possible. If you wish to review the entire regulation, need additional copies of the application, or need to check course dates and times, please consult our website: www.barrenriverhealth.org. Notification of any changes in class dates, times or locations of additional classes will be posted on our website. Thank you, Barry Turner
